WHAT IS SKILLS ASSESSMENT?
A Skills Assessment is an independent review of your skills, qualifications and employment experience confirming whether you are suitable for your nominated occupation and which must be carried out by skills assessing authority. Examples of skills assessing authorities include Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, Trades Recognition Australia, etc.
If you are applying for a Skilled (Independent), a Skilled (Nominated) visa or a Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (i.e. a subclass 189, 190 or 491 visa), a positive skills assessment will need to have been issued on or before the date when you receive an invitation to apply.
- You must check that your occupation is on the list of eligible skilled occupations
- Most of the occupations have their own skills assessment authority
- You must contact the relevant assessing authority to obtain a skills assessment if required
- Each assessing authority have their own procedures, time frames and charges
For some visa subclass and streams, it is a MUST for you to have a skills assessment. Make sure to check all information regarding the visa you are applying for to see if you need to submit a skills assessment and know when you can get one. By checking earlier ensures that you allow enough time to comply with any deadlines that apply to you (e.g. you may have a pending visa expiry).
You must have a skilled assessment if you’re applying to the following visas:
- Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) – Points Tested Stream
- Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
- Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Invited Pathway
WHY DO I NEED IT?
It is extremely important that you have a positive skills assessment if required, for your nominated occupation, this will allow you to fulfill your requirements towards your visa and eventually help you further your eligibility towards Permanent Residency. The assessment is evidence as proof that you have the skills to work in the nominated occupation.
