What’s Good in Darwin

When picturing the city of Darwin, you may think of orange sunsets, fresh seafood and waterfront markets full of tropical fruits. However, the city has increasingly established itself as a key player for plenty of delicious Laksa! This much-loved noodle soup has become a city-wide culinary favourite. Laksa is a popular Peranakan spicy noodle soup originating in South-East Asia and is a fusion of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian influences.

Two Main types of Laksa:

Curry Laksa Assam Laksa
Also known as curry mee, it is made from-coconut milk and curry paste and is creamy, intense and spicy due to the chillis on top. It is often bulked with fish balls, tofu puffs, noodles and prawns or chicken. Traditionally made with flat, thin rice noodles, it may also come in mee yellow wheat noodle instead.

Does not have any coconut milk and consists of a lighter broth made from fish, tamarind and torch ginger. The main ingredients include shredded fish, kembung, and finely sliced vegetables of cucumber, onions, red chillis, pineapple, lettuce, common mint and laksa mint. It is normally served with thick rice noodles and a thick sweet prawn-shrimp paste.
